Uku: Terms and Conditions
Last updated: October 24, 2026
These terms apply to your use of Uku, a Markdown reader for Windows, macOS and Linux made by Dinar Garipov (“I”, “me”), in every edition I distribute. By installing or using Uku you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t install or use Uku.
The short version:
- Uku is provided “as is”, without any warranty. Use it at your own risk.
- I am not liable for any loss or damage from using Uku, including any loss of data, to the fullest extent the law allows.
- Your files are on your computer and are your responsibility. Uku edits, renames, moves and deletes them when you ask it to: keep your own backups.
1. License to use Uku
I grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Uku on devices you own or control. You may not sell, rent or sublicense Uku, copy it for others, or remove copyright notices from it. Uku’s source code is not part of this license.
If you get Uku from an app store, that store’s license terms also apply. Where they conflict with these terms about that edition, the store’s terms win. The store is not a party to these terms and has no obligation to maintain or support Uku.
2. Software provided “as is”
Uku is provided “as is” and “as available”, with all faults, and without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, reliability, availability, compatibility, non-infringement, and that Uku will be free of errors, bugs or data loss, will show every document correctly, or will work without interruption. You use Uku entirely at your own risk.
I am under no obligation to provide support, maintenance, updates, bug fixes or new versions, and I may change or stop developing or distributing Uku at any time without notice.
3. Your files are your responsibility
Uku works on the files and folders you open, where they are (see the Privacy Policy). I have no copy of them and no way to recover them. You alone are responsible for:
- keeping backups of your documents. Uku saves your edits into the original file, ticks task boxes in it, and renames, moves and deletes files and folders when you ask it to. A deleted file goes to your system’s Trash or Recycle Bin, but that is your system’s feature, not a guarantee;
- changes made by other programs. Uku shows a file again when it changes on disk; when you have unsaved edits it asks before replacing them, but files changed by other editors, sync tools or scripts at the same time can still conflict;
- sync services you use (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, network drives and others). Conflicts, overwrites, lost or corrupted files caused by them, or by how Uku works with them, are your risk;
- links you open from documents, and the websites, files and apps behind them;
- checking that Uku is suitable for your purpose, and that what it shows is what the file says. Don’t rely on Uku’s rendering of a document for anything where a misread could cause harm (for example medical, legal, safety or financial information).
4. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, I shall not be liable for any damages or losses of any kind arising out of or in connection with Uku or these terms, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability or otherwise, and even if I was advised of their possibility. This includes, without limitation:
- loss, corruption, overwriting or disclosure of data, including documents, folders and settings;
- loss of profits, revenue, business, goodwill, time or opportunities;
- damage to your devices, software or other files;
- interruption of use, or the cost of replacement software or services;
- any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages;
- damages caused by third-party services, operating systems, sync services or other software.
Where liability can’t be excluded but can be limited, my total liability for all claims together is limited to the amount you paid for Uku in the twelve months before the claim, or, if you paid nothing, to zero where the law allows it and otherwise to the lowest amount the law allows.
Mandatory law. Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain warranties to be excluded or certain liability to be limited. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, such as, where applicable, liability for intent, gross negligence, injury to life, body or health, or under mandatory product liability or consumer protection law. In those cases the exclusions and limits above apply to the greatest extent the law allows.
5. Indemnity
To the extent the law allows, you agree to hold me harmless from claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use or misuse of Uku, or your breach of these terms.
6. Third-party components
Uku includes third-party open-source components, each under its own license; they are listed with their licenses in the app, under About Uku ▸ Open-source licenses. Those licenses apply to those components, and their authors give no warranty either.
7. Changes to these terms
I may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. If you keep using Uku after a change, the updated terms apply. If you don’t agree with them, stop using Uku.
8. Ending
You can stop using Uku at any time by uninstalling it. Your license ends automatically if you break these terms. Sections 2 to 5 and 9 continue to apply after that.
9. General
- Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of Germany, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
- Severability. If any part of these terms is found invalid or unenforceable, that part is limited or replaced by a valid provision that comes as close as possible to its intent, and the rest of the terms stay in effect.
- No waiver. If I don’t enforce a part of these terms, that doesn’t mean I give up the right to enforce it later.
- Entire agreement. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy and, for an app store edition, that store’s license terms, are the whole agreement between you and me about Uku.
